People put all sorts of items down their toilets…from seemingly harmless things like cotton buds, through to more bizarre objects like false teeth!

The problem is that our sewerage system and pumps were not designed to carry this kind of waste away from our homes.

This challenge aims to understand what people put down their toilets and why. Is it because it’s quicker and easier than disposing another way? Is it becuase they haven't given it much thought?

So let us know about the sorts of things you, your family or friends put down their loo. No anecdote too strange!  Hit the ‘Got A Great Idea?’ button below and get started.

As we all know wet wipes block drains, and kill wild life! Every one loves them but they contain plastic and are not biodegradable.  We must make sure that every packet carries a warning such as - WET WIPES DESTROY THE PLANET, DO NOT FLUSH DOWN THE TOILET.

We're doing lots of DIY at the moment. I cleaned one of my brushes with paint cleaner and had a mug full of painty paint cleaner. Normally I would have washed it out in the sink, and tipped the lot down the drain but because of this community i came over all guilty.... but still didn't know what to do with it? It says on the bottle not to pour it down the drain, so that rules out the drain in the road too... and our household recycling doesn't accept this stuff so what should I do? I...

the only thing i put down the toilet is tissue, i dont see why anyone would be so lazy and not put other items in the bin or have a little pedal bin in the bathroom/ toilet. we recentley had a problem with our drains due to a neighbour putting sanitary products down the loo, not nice to see at all!! just goes to show a few seconds laziness can cause such problems

noticing that someone mentioned that a pedal bin can cost no more than £5, made me think. Councils provide bins for our recycling, instruct us on what to recycle and do a weekly pick up of said recycling. what about, water companies providing free pedal bins for bathrooms (in a selection of colours), instruct what is to be put in them, and work with the councils to ensure that this waste is picked up. woukd it change thinking if the bathroom waste was treated this way?

The biggest problem with flushing everything down the toilet and throwing inaproprate things down the sink. Is that our sewer systems are Victorian and are not prepared for these things. We should be saving fat and oil in old containers and taking them to the local Council tip to dispose of them as if we do not we will have these large fat blocks, which block the sewerage system causing back up of sewarage which only has one place to go back up our toilets and sinks making the house stink...

I think the main reason so many things get flushed away is because people equate flushing down the toilet with putting straight in the sewer and see the sewer as the place for all things nasty and dirtydirty.they forget about the small pipes that take things to the sewers !

As a contraception nurse who teaches sex education I am always saying to my young people NOT to put condoms down the toilet! The reason is they block the toilet, they should be put in a bin to be got rid of. I think condoms are a big problem with blockages but maybe people are afraid to say anything.

Is it right that all of our waste/liquids on trains and planes go either on the tracks or on the fields over the world??? I have just researched this and the amount that is dumped in mind boggling. This is crazy - http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/trains-dump-much-human-waste-4445188

When one company makes or develops a product, this is often done with several objectives - to meet a customer need, to meet that need in a better way than other companies, make their company stand out, and as a consequence, increase their profits and shareholder dividends! Some companies will add certain other criteria to reach a more niche market - such as being known to be eco friendly, skin friendly, vegan friendly, animal friendly, etc. Other companies are looking for not worrying...

Most weeks in London we hear about pipes busting on the  local news which makes the road impassable or we see traffic lights so the traffic is held up.  Yes I do know that some of these pipes are Victorian  and have never been replaced BUT how much water are we wasting? When you see the water oozing out of the pipes we don't always see workmen around the site. We need to work quickly because soon there won't be enough water for us all
